Hot tomato

Today, I tasted the first hot, sweet tomato of the summer, plucked right off the tomato bush. Weeks of waiting for a small, green tomato to redden in the sun were rewarded as the juices dripped down my hand and ran towards my elbow with the first bite. The smell of warm, wet tomato leaves lingered on my skin, and the hens clucked at my feet and pecked the ground until I threw them the rind, and we all tasted that first magical tomato together – the hens and I.
