Chickens, chickens, chickens

Well, we’re one hen down, but two more hens up, bring us to a grand total of four hens. Two weekends in a row we have added to the brood. It seems we just cannot help ourselves.

Shasta is the golden girl. She laid two eggs the day we brought her home. It’s going to be hard for any of the other ladies to top that one.

Eleanor Roosevelt

YC had the day off of work on Thursday, and he texted me to say that he had gone to the feed and seed to get a few things for the girls and a surprise for us. My immediate thought was, “Another chicken!!!” But he flatly denied it. I got home around 5:30 to find my boyfriend in a panic over the surprise which had gone missing. Turns out it was another pullet after all. We think she’s an Ameracauna mix (maybe an Easter Egger?). She’s very sweet, and look at those blue legs and feet! Blue eggs coming our way in a few months!

At first, Shasta had a hard time integrating in with Hermione and Hildegarde, but she wasn’t too much bothered by it since she is about double their size. Now poor little Eleanor Roosevelt is the odd hen out, but we’re hoping in a few weeks she’ll be part of the mix too. Just have to straighten out that pecking order.
